The Independente Suites & Terrace, Lisbon – STAY

June 10, 2015

This may be the most affordable palace you will ever stay in.  Recently opened next to its older hostel counter-part (the Independente Hostel & Suites) this fantastic vintage-style hotel occupies a brilliant location right by the Sao Pedro de Alcantara viewpoint (Mirador).  This means that views from its famous roof top bar and restaurant, Insolito, are as good as it gets – with panoramic views of the whole city, from the Tagus river to the Castle.  The food here – mostly local dishes – is recommended (especially if you don’t stay here), and there is much of a party vibe on the weekends.

For party goers, you’re just north of the Bairro Alto, so you can easily stumble home from the nearby bar-infested streets, and yet the immediate surrounding area is peaceful.

And for those on a tighter budget and a love of Art Deco, I’d recommend the neighbouring Independente Hostel, which, with prices from about 10 EUR a night (in a shared room), is a massive steal.  I’ve heard seriously good things about this place.
