I’d never been to Cyprus before, and so was seriously looking forward to a long weekend in the spring sun in Cyprus. I came back feeling refreshed, a little sun kissed and wishing I’d stayed longer.
Why is Cyprus so great?
1) It’s a 4.5 hour flight from London to Paphos (you can also fly to Larnaka), and you have almost guaranteed sunshine (or at least warmth) at Easter. So it’s the perfect spring getaway.
2) The beautiful landscape. The countryside is stunning – very green, with rolling hills, luscious fields with wild flowers, olive groves and citrus orchards. There are a number coastal fishing villages which haven’t been too affected by tourism.
3) The beaches. Cyprus has a few sandy beaches, which are not like the Maldives as the sand is a bit browner and a bit coarser, but still – sand is better than pebbles or rocks and few European destinations can boast beaches like this. The sea is really clear and perfect for swimming and water sports.
4) Culture. The island has a long and interesting history. The House of Dionysus (UNESCO World Heritage) by Paphos Harbour is worth a visit, as are places like Salamis, Ancient Kourion, Choirokoitia and St Hilarion Castle.
Another big reason to go is because of the Anassa Resort, which is a beautiful five star hotel on the coast near Latchi – about a 50 minute drive from Paphos Airport.
It is the perfect beach get away – very peaceful, with sweeping views of Latchi bay and terraced gardens leading to the beach. The resort is large and spread out, so it never feels crowded. The gardens are beautifully maintained and there is constant heavenly smell of jasmine and rosemary in the air.
The rooms are all light and airy; white walls, floaty cream curtains, balconies spilling with bougainvillea. If you’re lucky, like we were, you can get your own private infinity pool – which is perfect if you want total privacy. The bigger suites are huge, perfect for families and the Presidential Suite is a real show stopper – with a huge balcony and an outside Jacuzzi with incredible views of the bay.
I was very impressed with the food – lots of fresh fish, grilled vegetables, Greek salads and (yes, it’s not all healthy) heavenly cakes and puddings. They have a number of fine dining restaurants and then more relaxed restaurants by the pool and where you have your breakfast (surrounded by silver olive trees), so there is plenty of choice if you stay for a week.
While the Anassa is great for a couples get-away, the hotel is probably best for families. The resort has a kids and teens club, and caters extremely well to children. There is a family-friendly pool which is ideal as it means that the adults pool is quiet and you won’t really be disturbed by screaming children.
Best of all? The service. It was truly excellent. The staff are so friendly, remember your name, what drink you like, if you smoke. Always smiling, always attentive, but never in the way. They made us feel very at home and very spoilt.
I’d highly recommend it for a long weekend away for some proper R & R and to catch some rays, and the Anassa is the perfect place to be pampered (the spa is fantastic).
