Juice Baby, Chelsea

December 30, 2014

After the influx of juice bars and healthy cafes in Soho and Marylebone, finally some new establishments have opened in South West London to join the healthy ranks of South Ken’s Good Life Eatery.

The Fulham Road now boasts CPress Juice (similar to Roots & Bulbs and Raw Press), Tanya’s Cafe round the corner is a huge success, and Juice Baby opened a month or two ago on the Kings Road (towards the ‘dodgy end’).  Despite the name, Juice Baby is a little gem.  Unlike many of its counter parts, which tend to look smart but have a slightly sterile and clinical feel to it (mainly large metal fridges for their juice displays), Juice Baby is super cosy and comfortable.

The seating area is not large, but it has a huge grey sofa to sink into while you sip one of their many juices (11 options).  Their bar/counter boasts monochrome tiling, as well as a very sophisticated coffee machine and – of course – a cold press juicer.  The low-hanging lamps could be taken from a trendy Soho pop up, and are dim and atmospheric.

As I waited for my friend Sarah, a number of gym-clad locals walked in.  They ordered their favourite smoothies and juices to take away, clearly frequent visitors.  As I would be if it was around the corner.

We ordered a large ‘Green Glow’ juice (seasonal leafy greens, cucumber, celery, apple, lemon and ginger), a cappuccino and a latte (made with cashew nut milk, of course) and two times the smashed avocados on toast.  All so good, and a welcome change to the stodge and booze I’d become accustomed to during the run up to Christmas.

I know you can easily smash an avocado and put it on toast yourself.   But for some reason my attempts have still to taste as good as it is here.  I adore their addition of mustard seeds and chilli oil, which definitely makes the dish.  You have a choice of sourdough or spelt bread.

This is the perfect place for a pre-shopping breakfast or a relaxed lunch (they also offer a number of home made sandwiches, salads and soups).  While there is limited seating I found it very peaceful, most people coming for a take-away juice, and leaving the sofa just for you.
