Basement Sate, Soho
In a dimly lit basement on Broadwick Street you will find a new bar, celebrating a combination of cocktails and pudding (yes, you heard me right). I was pretty excited to hear about this opening, since I have a massive sweet tooth and find that Soho can always do with a few more good cocktail bars.
We stumbled here fairly full after dinner at Palomar, convincing ourselves we still had space for one of Dorian Picard’s sweet delights. As tempting as the menu of 7 intricate deserts (with hefty price tags – at £11 a pudding, this is reminder that pudding is your ‘main meal’ here), we simply couldn’t stomach the richness. Cocktails however, we had space for.
I ordered the Beet me up, as my obsession with beetroot knows no bounds (and combined with ginger and vodka, this was perfection). Rob went for a citrusy gin cocktail. It seems like they leave the sugar to the puddings, as our cocktails were refreshing, delicious and lacking that classic cocktail sweetness. Exactly how I like them. And I guess therefore the perfect accompaniment to a desert.
The bar itself plays loud music. Too loud for 9:30pm in my opinion. But I guess it has this underground basement feel to it, and beats are key to this (the DJ decks were pretty impressive). The furniture is all dark woods, weathered mahogany leather chairs and low tables. I think they could have done more with the space, perhaps added more tables (we were sitting on bar stools against the wall). But I suppose they were leaving space for the dance floor.
What I did like were the low-lit booths on one end of the bar, which looked a bit little renovated stables (this may have been because of exposed brickwork). You clearly need to book these in advance. But they could be a good option for a group of friends, coming here for a post-dinner pudding, cocktail and a dance.
In short, the cocktails were great and perhaps if we’d been in more of a party mood we would have enjoyed the vibe more. I can’t rate the puddings as I didn’t try them. But when we left another couple was leaving too and they mentioned how incredible their puddings had been. I’ll have to return to sample them and dance off my sugar high.
